Get the knowledge and information you deserve to have

Summary

As me and my team thought of the idea to plan and create our website, we had to look at the core issues that we wished for our website to help with. The main topic being the lack of knowledge of healthcare and its access to many people. With much conversation and research from our trusted sources we came to the conclusion that the main groups lacking these resources are minority groups, low income families, and the elderly. These are some of the main groups of people especially who may need access to these resources. Whether the lack of healthcare access and information was due to expenses, language barriers, or just fear due to the uncertainty on the topic. This realization and understanding led to us wanting to create this digital platform to act as a bridge to between individuals in need of the website and the healthcare resources they may need access or to be informed on.

Once we had that goal in mind, we soon began the work of thinking about the kind of non-profit we wanted to be, namely a non-profit that serves the local community, creating meaningful, sustainable change. It is easy to forget that too many people access no medical care for too long of a time, so many go without because they don't know where to start, who to call, or what to do. This is more commonly true for those who are uninsured and underinsured. Our group brainstormed ways in which we could develop the website to be simple, warm, and easy to follow. We wanted people of all ages and experiences computer amateurs and professionals alike to be able to find the help they are looking for with only a few clicks. We agreed that the site needed to be bilingual, mobile-friendly, and written in plain language to benefit those for whom it was built.

We also discussed the tone for the website. It needed to be warm and supportive rather than distant and complicated like a lot of government health sites. We wanted users to feel like there was someone there for them. We wanted to empower our community with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to take charge of their health. This brainstorm helped us outline an online space that would inform, advocate, and motivate.

“Going in I didn’t have any idea of what I needed or wanted. With help from access from all I was able to confidently make my own healthcare decissions.”
